Are Potatoes Toxic?

February 25, 2009

red-potato

Edible Vaccines- using raw potatoes.

Here they’re toxic yet have health benefits as well.

Here they’re okay unless eaten in LARGE quantities. Large quantities is not quantified.

Here they’re okay unless they’re green.

It appears that there is some controversy over this raw potato issue. Some say it’s okay and are making a vaccine with it. Others say it’s bad. Of the one’s who say it’s bad are more of the individual web sites by individuals who may or may not have much nutritional background.

Some people say potatoes are bad altogether, raw or cooked, not because of toxins but just because their nutritional value is less than most other veggies and the benefits of them don’t outweight the lack of nutrients.

From what I gather, there is no difinitive answer on whether potatoes are good or bad for you raw. Some people will have some gastrointestinal discomfort. I’ve never experienced this or had any bad reaction to raw potatoes. But I do feel gastrointestinal discomfort with ice cream. I still eat it though… What can I say? The taste outweights the discomfort with ice cream :).

You’re darn tootin! I’ll take ice cream! Yeah, Macrobiotics say that potatoes (and tomatoes) are bad, because they’re “nightshade” vegetables.

I’ve never seen conclusive research backing up any of it. It’s probably up to the individual constitution.

I agree, people react differently to many different foods. I’ll keep eating my raw potatoes :). I just like them crunchy like that!

I love potatoes, cooked or raw, makes no difference to me. 🙂 I think we both know someone whose opinion is a bit different , don’t we. I won’t mention a name though.
You really hurt my feeling Michelle. 😦
Here you invite Luke and Megan over, but not me. I see were I stand. He He.. You just want him there so you can kick his butt in person with those KB’s. I personally thought that once a year we can all meet up and have a KB competition
(You and Josh, Megan and Luke and then there is single ole Me). We can rotate each year to a different persons home. I say this year we take a road trip or plane trip to Australia 🙂

On a side note to the above comment. I do have to say that the only potatoes I eat now are sweet potatoes. Yes, I do cook them 🙂 I do see and understand what Luke said or is referring to regarding eating them raw. So the controversy continues 🙂

Rob, you’re more than welcome, too :). Though I think I’m more likely to go there then you to come here. I don’t know why anyone would want to come here (or to Canada- Luke’s just nuts). Sounds good to me to get together. I’m sure Josh wouldn’t mind going to Vegas again though I personally didn’t care for it. Then again, we were on the strip and I’m not a big fan of crowds- casino’s are bunches of huge crowds…

I found much the same Michelle – no conclusive evidence from either camp!
Personally I can’t stand the taste of an undercooked potato though, so I’m not eating any raw ones any time soon!

I looked for quite a bit. I had to know! And no really reputable source to confirm or deny :(. I was hoping I’d find something really conclusive. Oh well :). Can’t have everything I want!

Are only certain types of potatoes toxic?… Are they only toxic when consumed raw? I haven’t heard anything about potatoes being toxic, but I also don’t research these topics…

    • February 26, 2009 6:03 PM

See, that’s the thing, no one really knows. Some people say they are, some people say they’re not. I was hoping someone would read this and be able to point me to verifiable scientific proof one way or the other :).

From the sources I’ve read there seems to be some agreement to green potatoes and some say onlyl raw some say raw and cooked if they’re green. And to avoid the eyes of the potatoes raw or cooked.

Though I doubt that Wikipedia is a credible source… I did find an article there:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potatoes

It does cover the topic of its toxicity

I wonder too about Wiki, they wont let us use it as a source for college at all. It sort of had similar info to what I was reading, there is some toxicity (but nearly all foods have some toxicity to them from what I’ve been reading), but it may or may not be harmful seems to be what they’re saying as well. They said toxicity is more than the typical 12.5 grams we’d get of the solanine that we’d get from taters. It didn’t seem to cover raw potatoes though. I’ll keep searching for difinitive answers :).
