Protein Shake and Status Update

December 3, 2008

I’ve already admitted to ruthlessly promoting NROL. Well, I also promote GNC’s protein powder and Raspberry Passion. Fitness equipment at 2nd Wind. Then of course there’s shopping at Sears… none of these companies/people know I exist, but hey, that’s okay :). Well, maybe the 2nd Wind guys do because I’m there once a week.

Here is my joyous protein shake in all it’s glory:
protein-shake

Some crazy person suggested doing ensure shakes instead of protein shakes because they’re “cheaper”. Well, they’re not cheaper. They might come in a smaller pack for less up front cost, but overall cost is nearly a dollar per shake with ensure. My bucket cost me about 50 bucks and provides 93 or 94 shakes. I forget and I’m too lazy to get up and check.

Status Update:
Weight- up 0.5 lbs to 134 this AM.
Body Fat % according to the scale is 27%. I’m a bit doubtfull since a month ago at this weight (well, half a pound less) it said 23%. Accuracy of my scale is in doubt but I have no other method at this time.
Measurements- down .25 inches from last week. Not expecting any changes here, so .25 inches is great.
21 Day Goal- I’m on day 14 and it’s going well. I used to have a soda by 7am. Now I’m not going for one till nearly 11. And that’s all thanks to my trusty water bottle. I’m sticking to four per day and that seems fine for me. Today I could have probably gone without the lunch soda as well. I noticed my morning water was not quite finished so I slammed that and should have filled up for my lunch bottle but grabbed a soda first then had my lunch bottle of water. After work comes another, which I slammed just so I could have a soda. I think going without soda will be much easier this time around since the water is in :).

Workout today- I’ve noticed Wed is not a good lifting day for me. I’m planning for Tue, Thur, Sat, Sun this week. I’ve also noticed that about 5 weeks is all the stamina I have for a particular routine. I can lift for weeks and weeks and weeks if I don’t pass that five week mark. I’m absolutely not wanting to do this week and I’ve noticed that often on the sixth weeks of my programs or on the 6, 7, and 8th weeks of the longer programs. My next program will be cut short anyway because in Jan I’m starting kettlebells. Still planning on a total of 12 weeks with them. First week rest, five week bells, another week rest, five more weeks of kettlebells. Then back to a NROL program or two for 12 weeks. I’m hoping for my bodyweight program right in the middle of summer because I’ve got some things I want to do in my backyard like hand a rope from the tree. I think that would be so fun!

I’d love to read more about your experiences with those protein shakes. What benefits have you noticed? How long have you been using them? Thanks for any input! Judie

Things I’ve noticed- better recovery is the biggest thing. I started lifting a long time ago and would have DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) sometimes 2-3 days after a workout. Even after my first few weeks I’d still get that when I’d increase weights. Once I started taking the protein powder, I almost never have muscle soreness the day after and never have it two days after. I still get the immediate post workout soreness that says “hey, you worked hard!” but not the later effects.

I also noticed before when I was tracking (not this time) an increase in lean body mass with a decrease in scale weight greater with the shake than without even though at first, as a begginer, I should have had more fat loss and muslce bulk immediately. Yet, with the shake, I got better results than first starting out. This time, I’m not tracking because it’s a lot of work to track all that. I should maybe attempt to do a month by month tracker, that wouldnt be so bad.

I’m sure I’ve had other experiences, just can’t think of them now!
