A long while back, someone was discussing Objectivism with me. And they had the stick argument… you know, when you put a stick half in and half out of water, it looks bent. So the individual was saying, according to objectivism, the stick then, is bent. At the time, I knew that this logic (or lack of logic) was faulty but I didn't have the ability to explain at the time. So today, out of nowhere I came across a random blurb on objectivism and I remembered this old discussion. And today I have the words (or at least better words than I did then). First, to science. Objectivity in science, we might think the stick was being bent, but we would do further testing to objectively check, wouldnt we? But the philosophy of objectivism is much simpler even than that. It's merely that reality is reality. It is independent of man. Objectivism is merely that we dont make reality, reality is just that, reality. Man (or woman really) comes in and we percieve that reality. It is not that the stick is being bent but that we percieve the stick as being bent. How we percieve reality may not really be how things are. How we percieve reality still does not change reality. (since we all know that water does not really bend a stick, it merely appers to). So there.

    Yay comments!

OK.. so way back in philosophy we talked about this.. the argument of you actually witnessing it is what makes something real. Its all hooey. lol.

So the stick isnt bent… but *drumroll* the light refraction is. Just let your friend know that there is a little hole in your eye that your brain fills in with what seems to “fit”… so sometimes you just cant believe your own eyes.

Yep, that is true. It’s been ages since I last had this discussion, so hopefully my friend will just visit here and bring it up. Cuz honestly, I dont remember which one it was! Bad memory!

And you found me :). lol

Objectivism really is fantastic, it makes so much sense. You can’t really argue with the logic but I guess it’s personal preference. Dunno, this might be interesting

Interesting. But I wonder if it is necessary to indoctrinate or package the philosophy of objectivisim.
